The Reality of Cancer Care in Bangladesh

Many cancer patients in Bangladesh are diagnosed late. Outside the cities, regular check-ups and screening are harder to reach, so early symptoms often go unnoticed.

Treatment is rarely simple once diagnosed. Families from outside Dhaka often have to come to Dhaka and stay for days on end, and on top of chemo or radiotherapy costs comes the added burden of lodging and travel.

Through a long treatment, patients grow physically exhausted, and families carry the emotional and financial strain too. Getting steady support for appetite, sleep, and morale alongside the main treatment, especially outside the cities, isn't easy.

What Cancer Is, Why It Happens, and Its Symptoms

Cancer is a disease in which certain cells in the body lose their normal control and begin growing abnormally. These cells can gradually form a tumour and, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body (metastasis).

There is no single specific cause of cancer. However, several risk factors can increase the chances of developing it, including —

Risk Factors

Tobacco or smoking Excessive alcohol use Unhealthy eating habits Obesity Physical inactivity Certain viruses or infections Long-term exposure to harmful chemicals Excessive sun exposure or radiation Family or hereditary factors

Common Symptoms

An unusual lump or swelling anywhere on the body
Unexplained weight loss
Long-lasting fatigue or weakness
A persistent cough or change in voice
A change in normal bowel or bladder habits
Unusual bleeding or discharge
A sore that doesn't heal for a long time
Difficulty swallowing food
A change in the size, colour, or shape of a mole or skin mark

Having these symptoms doesn't necessarily mean cancer, though. Many other conditions can cause similar symptoms. If any symptom lasts more than two to three weeks, or worsens quickly, it's best not to delay and to consult a specialist physician.
